What a 3D projection mapping company does?
A 3D Projection Mapping Company uses this projection technology to transform objects, often of irregular shape, into a display surface for video projection.
Objects come to life: they transform, move, catapult you into other worlds, tell stories of characters, and much more.
The images refer to a Christmas show, while further down you can see a frame of a historical set. It is a noble coat of arms engraved in the rock but deteriorated over the centuries until it almost disappeared. It has been reconstructed and animated to enhance a medieval castle as a venue for cultural events.
This technique is employed by artists and advertisers to achieve extra dimensions and optical illusions on previously static objects.
The processing technique involves an initial phase of video design. The target surface is faithfully reconstructed in 3D, and subsequently, the 3D model is animated based on the creative concepts agreed upon with the client.
Next step, namely the final one, is the live direction of the show. In this phase, using specific software, the goal is to ensure that the video projection of the animated model perfectly overlays the real surface. In a dark environment, the perception is achieved that the surface comes to life.
Based on the projection surface, we can distinguish various types of 3D projection mapping.
In this case, we refer to architectural 3D projection mapping when we want to animate architectural structures such as churches, palaces, monuments, etc. This type of projection is mainly used for city celebrations, such as Christmas events, and for institutional occasions like inaugurations or activities aimed at enhancing museums and modern buildings.
Interior 3D projection mapping, on the other hand, involves mapping the indoor spaces of buildings. This type is the one we primarily work on at Officina Kreativa. For example, we create 360° video mapping. Managing up to 18 projectors simultaneously, we transform the four walls of rooms into a single large screen with a resolution of over 20 thousand pixels. Visitors perceive entering other dimensions, as if wearing a VR headset. Interior video mapping is a solution commonly used for business events, theatrical stages, and art exhibitions.
If the same technique is chosen to animate smaller surfaces, in that case, we are talking about micro mapping. Consider, for instance, car mapping to unveil a new car model, bottle mapping to enhance a beverage during a trade show exhibition, cake mapping for a significant reception, face mapping if we want to bring a static face to life (we can make the face of a statue speak or animate a mask), etc.
Water Projections Mapping
A 3D scenic show can also be achieved by projecting onto a water screen created by an electric pump in large basins (lakes, sea, and pools). Water projections mapping, thanks to the transparency of the misted water, gives the viewer the sensation of observing a giant hologram suspended on the water.
